{EXCERPT}

I closed my eyes and prayed, for an anchor, for a distraction, for a way to make it through.

“Why don’t we start with the meeting without wasting more time? I bet you all have things you need to get done.”

My eyes flew open, forgetting everything, wanting nothing more than to look in the direction of his voice. He walked past me toward his chair at the head of the table.

I couldn’t look away, absorbing every detail.

A full head of luxurious brown hair, cut to finesse, swayed gently as he moved, highlighting the natural shades of his hair in the sunlight peeking through the blinds.

He was wearing a white shirt, covered by a dark charcoal suit that accentuated his broad muscular shoulders.

The jacket did nothing to hide the form of his well-sculpted body, making it more prominent, presenting a perfect tease to the spectator.

Recalcitrant eyes travelled lower, following his footsteps, wholly captured by his presence.

A taut derriere flaunted long, lean legs that carried him with utmost confidence and surety to his chair.

I was captivated.

Everything around me became slow, too heightened, and nothing but my heart and his presence, his evasive, invasive presence mattered in this moment.

I observed everything about him, forgetting my entire existence. Such was my obsession with a stranger I didn’t know. I wanted to know him like the emotion that lived within me, that withering throb of emptiness. I wanted him to be the oasis that washed over the Sahara of my battered heart. I wanted to be set free.

And even without reason, from within the deep recesses of my fragile, empty existence, a voice boomed with utmost surety, stating this known stranger to be my demise…and my rebirth.

My eyes locked onto his neck, reveling in his very life force, the beat of his pulse as he adjusted his collar. What I felt for him was so carnal…I craved him, as he reached out to grab the arm of the chair, wanting nothing more than to be ravished by his touch.

I wanted to be the object of his affection.

{EXCERPT}

I drive to the bookstore, wishing I’d see Mr. Vescovi behind the desk, with his silver-white hair, stark against his olive skin. His big smile greeting me in his slightly broken English. “Mia bella, how lovely to see you today.” My heart is heavy with the longing to hear his voice one more time.

Parked out front, my stomach uneasy, the dark store adds to my grief. Undeterred, I step onto the pavement and walk up to the window. Peeking in through the glass door to see if anyone is inside, a cold chill runs up the back of my sundress. The store is dark, lifeless.

I walk to the corner of the building and take a peek through Mr. Vescovi’s display of Little Golden Books mixed in with classic children’s books such as Charlotte’s Web, Where the Wild Things Are, and The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh in the large window. A light is on in the back storage room, so I figure someone is probably here after all.

“Hello, hello,” I say in vain, as if anyone can hear me through the glass. Instead, I ball up my fist and knock hard on the window. “Hello. Is someone in there?”

A dark shadow appears in the storage room doorway, so I rap the glass again and wave. “Hello. Hello.”

The tall image with broad shoulders and large torso raises his hand and waves me away.

I find myself suddenly pounding the glass, going from using my knuckles to my whole fist.

I see him, rather than hear him, say something as his hand flies at me in another go-away gesture.

I don’t relent and continue rapping on the glass until the figure moves forward, revealing himself to be even larger than I’d first thought. The dark tee-shirt pulling across his chest exhibits the muscles that help contribute to his size.

“We’re closed,” he shouts loud enough for the man standing on the corner, taking a drag off his cigarette, to look in our direction.

My adrenaline high, I flap a finger toward the door, signaling for him to open it and let me in. Again, he shouts, “We’re closed.”

At this point, a pride of lions couldn’t stop me from entering Mr. Vescovi’s store, so I continue knocking until he finally unlocks the door and pushes it open an inch or two. How generous. “I said, we’re closed.” This is not the warm and cheerful Mr. Vescovi. This man may be tall, handsome, and twenty-something, with eyes the color of a Van Gogh sky and hair as black as midnight, but he is the complete opposite of his gentle-hearted predecessor.

“What do you want?” he growls, his voice is deep, charred from either years of tobacco use or a lifetime of yelling at people.

“I’m Haven Quinn.”

“I don’t care if you’re Angelina Jolie. We’re closed. Indefinitely.”

“But. I’m Haven—”

“Yes. You’ve stated that,” he interrupts.

“Your grandfather named me in his will.”

If I think that piece of information will bring out his warmer side, I am mistaken. Pushing open the door a few more inches, so he can scrutinize me from head to toe, he lets spill his assumption. “You’re a little young for my grandfather, aren’t you?”

“Excuse me?”

“Why else would he leave you a collection worth five hundred and forty thousand dollars?”

“Five hundred and forty thousand!” I blurt childishly. “I think you have the wrong person. Your grandfather left me an Ernest Hemingway book. One.” I doubt it's worth five hundred and forty thousand dollars.

“No,” he sneers. “It’s you. Besides that one book, he also left you my entire collection of signed first edition Ernest Hemingway books. Totaling about five hundred and forty thousand dollars. Those books are the most expensive collection he had,” he continues through gritted teeth and fluttering nostrils. “I hope you were a good lay, and it was worth it for him.”

“You don’t even know me to make that kind of assumption.”

“I know your type, gorgeous. You get by on that long golden hair, those deep brown eyes—” He eyes my body top to bottom again. “—those long lean legs. You expect the world to cater to you, and you don't care what you have to do to get what you want. Including getting old guys off in exchange for their fortunes.”

“Who the hell do you think you are?” My two inch heel grinds the cement step. A stinging warmth of perspiration collides with the salty tears forming on the rim of my burning eyes. Reality hits me in an instant. Forever gone is my kind, old friend, mentor and nurturer who shared my love of books. I fling open the door and hold my hand flat against it so he can't pull it shut. “Your grandfather is probably looking down on you shaking his head in disgust. I don’t need the Hemingway book. I’m just here out of respect for a dear friend.” I turn on my heel and walk away, heartbroken for a man I’ll never have the pleasure of talking with again and maddened by a man I hope never to see again.

Not ten feet from the door, my hopes are already dashed.

“Wait.” Not even a please.

“What?” I say with just as much contempt when I turn around.

“Sorry I was rude, but a half-million dollars is a lot of money.”

He expects me to respond, but I turn back around and take a step toward my car.

“Maybe—” he shouts so I stop walking. “—we can discuss this pathetic stipulation further. When I get back from California.”

Once again, I turn to face him and sigh. “I don’t even know what you’re talking about. I received a phone call from a Mr. Samuel Hart saying that I was to pick up the Green Hills of Africa book that Mr. Vescovi left me. He never mentioned anything about a five hun—”

“Right. Well, there’s a bit more to it. I don’t have time to get into it right now, I gotta be to the airport in an hour, but can we meet in two weeks? I’ll bring a copy of his will.”

“Fine.” Aside from being a regular customer, it doesn’t make sense that Mr. Vescovi would leave me anything, but I can’t just ignore his grandson, rude as he may be.

“Is there somewhere we can meet around here?”

“Oh. We’re confirming plans now?”

“Unless you want me to guess where you’re gonna be.”

Jackass. “I can give you my phone number.”

He holds up his hands. “No pen.”

“Cellphone?”

“Not on me.”

What. An. Ass. “Fine...There’s a diner on route 206 in Branchville. Jumboland.”

The guy snorts. An immature ass.

“So I just need a day and time,” I say.

“Monday the twenty-sixth. 7 p.m.”

“I work in the evenings.”

“Doing what?”

“None of your business.” My voice cracks. Betrayer.

“I can find out on the internet if I really want to.”

“Be my guest.”

“Does noon work?”

“Noon works.” It goes against my nature to leave a discussion without a proper farewell, but that’s exactly what I do when I turn on my heel and leave Quest Vescovi once and for all.

My Review:

Not having read other books by the author before, I was impressed with just how well she executed the book. There were a lot of twists and turns in the story that I did not expect and that had me reading nonstop until the very end.

In the story we get to meet Alexa Blakely, a renowned photographer whose career had to be put on pause after she ends up in a car accident. The accident was so severe that the doctors had to amputate one of her legs which changed her life forever. Now she has to use a prosthesis and attend therapy in order to get back to life. But what caused her more pain is the memory loss that she had to endure after the accident and now she has no recollection of the husband she once had. But when she moves back to her apartment in L.A. she stumbles upon Landon Davis, her neighbor who happens to be a famous musician (but she doesn’t recognize him right away). It is his friendly attitude and good looks that intrigued her, but she knows that any kind of relationship with him will not end well. Alexa is trying to move on with her life, but having everyone around her remind her of her husband is making things difficult for her. Nevertheless, Landon always finds a way to be there for her and their relationship turns friendly right away. As the two start to spend more time with each other, the more relaxed she becomes around him and the more her feelings start to grow for him. But there are things in her past that could potentially hurt their relationship and she will not stop until she figures out her past before it’s too late.

Landon Davis is a famous musician who has no trouble attracting the opposite sex, he has the money and looks to get just about anything he wants. But even with all the power that he has, he still can’t get himself out of writer’s block and if he doesn’t release a single he will find himself in trouble with his label company. When he meets Alexa Blakely outside their building, he is immediately attracted to her. She is feisty and her no nonsense attitude is what makes him want her even more. Landon knows that Alexa has been through so much pain and he wants to be there for her, but he is keeping things from her that could change the course of their relationship if he doesn’t tell her. As the two find more things in common with each other, the harder it becomes from him to not fall in deeply in love with her. Now it’ll be up to them to decide if they can have a future together after all or not.

I truly enjoyed reading Aligned, it was well written and the pace truly made the story that much more interesting. Both of the characters are flawed and have their moments throughout the series, but they also manage to evolve towards the end. The amount of twist and turns in the story had me hooked and invested in the characters. I wish the author could have elaborated on some of the scenes, but it still worked out in the end. I would highly recommend reading the series and the after story (if you sign up to the author’s emailing list)! :)

{EXCERPT}

“Nora?”

I wheeled around to face Sarah, the head maid.

“What are you doing here?”

I looked at the floor. The grey and green grain of the marble flowed like the lines on one of Sir Alcander’s maps. I ran the tip of my shoe along one of the paths.

“I’m looking for Robert,” I said. “I need to talk to him. It’s important.”

“He’s taking dictation for Sir Alcander.” Sarah looked past me down the hall. “He’ll be done soon. Come with me.”

She put a hand on my back and ushered me in the direction from which I’d come.

“You’re not supposed to be in here,” she said.

“I know.” I tucked the cameo into my pocket. “But it’s important. Don’t tell Greta, please.”

Sarah glanced behind us. The pressure of her hand on my back became more urgent.

“It’s not Greta I’m worried about.” She opened the door to the servants’ quarters and pushed me inside. “Stay here. I’ll get Robert.”

She left the door open a crack and hurried down the hall. I sat on Robert’s bed. A long piece of straw poked out of the mattress. I pulled it out from the fabric and broke a piece off the end. By the time Robert arrived, shutting the door behind him, there was a small pile of straw on my lap. I leapt off the bed, spilling it on the floor.

“Sorry.” I bent down to sweep the straw into my hand. Robert knelt to help me.

“Nora, what are you doing here? You’re not supposed to be—”

“I need to talk to you,” I said. “It’s about my—” The word stuck on my tongue. “Um, Siobhan and Annabelle said that...” I took the cameo out of my pocket. “Who is this?”

Robert snatched it out of my hand. “What are you doing with this?” My cheeks burned. “I found it on the shelf. Is it your wife?”

The angry lines on Robert’s face softened. “No, it’s my sister. She died a long time ago. Why do you ask?”

I sat on the bed. I felt heavy enough that I might sink into the straw and never come out.

“Siobhan and Annabelle said they heard Lady Portia and Sir Alcander talking, and they said that my”—I choked out the word — “father was in the main house. I thought that you might be—”

Robert moved away, dropping the straw into a bucket next to the bed. I sank farther into the mattress. Being poked with spindles of straw was preferable to the silence in the room.

“Your father?” Robert said. “Nora, the man who was your father is long gone.”

“But you have to be,” I protested. “Your hair, it’s just like mine.”

“What, this old mess?” Robert ran a hand through his hair and sat down next to me.

My voice dropped to a whisper. “It has to be you.”

“I’m sorry, Nora. I don’t have any children. Peter’s been a good father to you, hasn’t he?”

“Yes.” I could feel each razor of straw jabbing into my skin. “I just thought—”

Wait. What did he say?

“You know who my father was!” It came out as a statement, not a question. Robert jumped up from the bed.

“No, Nora, you misunderstood. I—”

“Yes, you do!” I leapt up after him. “You said he was gone, but you know who he was. Tell me!”

Robert’s eyes darted back and forth as if he were looking for a way to escape the conversation before fixing on a point behind me. Panic tinged his voice.

“She was just bringing a message from the kitchen house.”

I turned to see Lady Portia standing on the other side of the door. I hadn’t heard it open. Waves of anger passed through her cold ocean eyes. I had only ever seen Lady Portia angry, but this was different. This was rage, and it was aimed squarely at me.

Robert put a protective arm around my shoulders.

“I’m sending her back right now.”

“Eleanor.” Lady Portia’s voice was ice cracking. “You are not permitted in here.”

“I’m sorry,” I croaked. “I’ll go back.” This was different from Sarah’s confusion at finding me in the hall or Robert’s initial anger at discovering his cameo in my hands. Different, and infinitely more dangerous.

Before I could move, Lady Portia was in the room, grabbing my arm and wrenching me from Robert’s grasp. I could feel her breath on my cheeks as she pulled me close.

“You are supposed to stay in the kitchen house,” she hissed. She jerked me out of the room and down the hall.

“Ma’am—” Robert started after us.

“Stay where you are,” Portia said without turning to look at him. “This is none of your business.”

I looked back, panicked, as I flailed in my attempt to keep up with Lady Portia’s long stride. I heard the sound of the back door being thrown open. I could only hope Robert was going to get Greta or Peter.

Lady Portia’s fingers burned on my arm as she pulled me behind her, making a series of turns through the hallways. Anytime I opened my mouth to protest, to apologize, to cry, she jerked me forwards, and my words were swallowed in a yelp of pain. She finally stopped in front of a plain, wooden door. It felt out of place next to the other doors in the hallway, which were lacquered and covered in carvings. Its austerity didn’t belong, just like I didn’t.

My wrist glowed red when Lady Portia let me go, and I rubbed my arm to quell the pain. My mouth ran ahead of me, spitting out every apology I could think of. She ignored me as she sorted through the keys on a ring she took from her dress pocket and fit a large iron key into the lock. The door creaked open. I couldn’t make out anything inside—there were no windows to let in the light. The darkness in the room felt different than when the kitchen house darkened after sunset. This darkness was hungry. I turned to run.

Portia caught my wrist and shoved me into the room. I fell on my hands and knees. Small pieces of something—dust? ash?—rose up around me, making their way into my throat. I started to cough.

“Never ask about your father again.” She slammed the door, plunging me into the dark.

TYLER

Shit. I have so much I want to say and to ask her. I want to know what the hell is going on with this Carlos asshole exactly. I want to explain that I have been trying to stay away and that I’m only here now because I want to make sure she’s okay. Because I owe her. Because I love her. Because I loved her back when she was just a kid and Scotty’s little sister and now I’ve fallen in love with the woman she is.

But her bare ass in my hands, tongue in my mouth, and thighs wrapped around my waist convince me that I can table that shit for a later date.

I walk her back to the trunk of the car and slam her down on it. She throws her legs open and that’s when I notice two things:

One: Her devil costume has a little red devil tail hanging off the back of the panties and it’s dangling down on the trunk of the car between her open thighs. Which is adorable and hot as shit at the same time. And…

Two: The panties themselves have a zipper on the crotch.

And I’m done.

And then I’m undone.

Two zippers go down in quick succession.

I slide her to the edge of the trunk where my cock is waiting to receive her. The morning sunshine creates an incredibly different atmosphere than we had the last time we were back here together. It’s strange. The night we fucked back here we were secret, hidden, protected, glancing furtively to make sure no one saw us.

Now, today, we couldn’t be more exposed, but neither one of us seems to notice or care. And I realize suddenly that the last time we fucked in this very alley, it was also after some drama created by Unlucky Logan. The difference is last time, I kind of stepped in and saved Scarlett, and this time Maddie sure as shit saved herself. And thinking about that again pushes hot, boiling blood into my dick and I thrust myself inside her with the same kind of reckless force that she defended herself with.

“More,” she grunts out, tightening the grip of her calves around my hips and dragging me into her further.

The teeth of the zippers on both her panties and my jeans rub against the skin on my shaft as I pound in and out, and the scraping, lacerating feeling makes me harder, which causes me to want to fuck her just that much more fiercely. Because I deserve to be punished. I owe her that. I can take it.

I’ve taken worse.

And then I pull out without warning.

“The fuck are you going?” she asks.

I bend down and when I stand back up, I’m holding the pitchfork. I hand it to her.

“Here,” I say, pulling my t-shirt over my head. The look on her face lets me know that it’s one thing to see the scars in the darkened seclusion of a strip club, or the black of an alley at night, or even my place or hers after the sun has taken its rest. It’s an entirely other matter confronting them in the bright light of day.

I force the pitchfork into her hand as I slip my dick back inside her again.

“Use it,” I say.

“Fuck are you talking about?” she says.

“Press it into me. My chest. While I’m inside you,” I say as I begin pumping in and out again.

“I don’t—” she starts. But I know what’s right. What I want. What she needs.

“Just do it,” I wheeze, as I fuck her sweet pussy. I just want to pleasure her. I want to make her feel good.

And I want her to punish me.

Now.

“Do it,” I urge again.

Her eyes narrow and she gets (appropriately) a devilish grin. And then without another word, she rocks her hips back and forth with the thrusting of mine, while at the same time pressing the sharp prongs of the tool into the scarred flesh on my chest. I can feel it ripping and tearing, but I don’t feel pain. Not in a conventional sense. Not even when she drags the edges down to my waist. I just know that she needs to hurt me, and this seems like a good start.

I watch her forearm tense. I can see her trying to stop herself from just fucking impaling me right here, which is what she wants to do. And if she does, she does. But as long as she doesn’t, I’m going to keep sliding this big cock in and out of her until she comes.
